COURSE OBJECTIVES :

The course is designed for anyone interested in understanding the economics of money, banking and financial institutions. The main objective of the course is to introduce you to the various concepts, ideas and theories of modern money, banking and financial institutions. My intention is to help you understand concepts/theories and relate them to current economic events and policies. I hope that by the end of the course you will have a basic understanding of the macroeconomic issues related to money and banking and will be able to critically analyze economic events and policies.


EXAMINATIONS AND GRADING

The final course grade will be based on your performance on one mid-term exam, one final exam and four quizzes and assignments. The final grade will be based on the following:

There will be a total of four quizzes and the grades of the best three quizzes will be counted towards your final grade. No make up will be offered for the quizzes.

If you have to miss an exam or more than one quiz due to circumstances beyond your control, you need to get approval from me before the exam. In case of emergencies, you must provide supporting documentation. If these conditions are not met, a missed exam will carry a zero grade.

Grading Scale:


The final letter grades will be assigned as:

A = 90-100%
B = 80-89%
C = 70-79%
D = 60-69%
F = 59% or below

Homework:

I will assign Homeworks sometime. You do not have to turn in the homework assignments. But you are responsible for the materials covered in the homework assignments. I strongly suggest you to do the homeworks. The homework assignments will be closely related to the objective of the course and will help you understand the material better and prepare for the exams.

Assignments:

I will assign several assignments throughout the class. The assignments will be related to the course materials and the idea of the assignments is to make you familiar with the real world sitautions. The specific assignments will be discussed in class.

  1. I reserve the right to make changes to the syllabus. Any changes will be announced in class.

  2. You are responsible for the material covered and the announcements made in the class.


  3. Your participation is highly encouraged in the class as it makes class more interesting and enhances your learning. Please feel free to ask questions in class.
